Hi, thanks for the video and the clear explanation. I think it is beter, though, to have the isolation tranformer first and the variac second on your bench. Quote from the internet: “Grounding issues aside, the isolation transformer first is the better way. If the variac is first, you will starve the magnetic field of the isolation transformer, causing poor voltage control, especially at lower voltages.”

I have to admit the person that picked those values did a cute little trick where they did the whole thing as close to 1V=1KR in the divider. Not perfectly, obviously they had to stick to a e series for the resistors (E96 in this case, or 1% tolerance resistors). Still, good on that person for not picking really out there values. edit: It makes life so much easier for the technician. I saw you had alan there in the comments looking at it all as currents as an ee would do. Once you hand it to the tech, you want something you can quickly model in your head

Things I remember... Some of the cans have 5 volt regulators inside. Surprise! The separate grounds were an attempt to reduce noise from the digital getting into the analog. Beware the ugly sidebands. Yeah, most of the schematics are a suggestion. Good luck! 73 es GB W3IHM

My Osborne executive stopped giving image a few days ago. It was working with an external monitor. I checked the voltage and it was generating 14V instead of 12. After removing the PSU, it started to click every second. I tested the voltage after the diode bridge, and it was 166, but according to the internet, it’s normal that the voltage increase after the bridge…. Since I’m not very good with electronics, if any of you have any tips of what I should text, I appreciate it. Thanks. (I wish in my small city of Idaho Falls I could find someone willing to take a look in exchange of $$$). But I couldn’t find any. Thanks guys.

I am not familiar with that particular instrument but wonder if the missing ground is provided by the wiring in the output connector??

    • @paulmoir4452

It's hard to catch, but if you look at the top and bottom of the PCBs there is no evidence of any connection to the "ground island" which includes the replaced 100uF capacitors. Goes to the round IC and a passive below, one pin on the connector (and only 1 ground pin, the rest are voltages), the 100uFs and their bleeders, jumpers up into around one of the regulators. But no possibility of grounding through their tabs since it doesn't run to the centre terminal of any. No "empty" pads for a jumper. Looks like a complete oversight that required a bodge wire in production. EDIT: would love a full view of the front and back of these while troubleshooting. Even if you figured it out, it's fun for us to exercise our skills.

Oops, this video reminds me of a long time ago where the company I used to work at, still made detailed service-manuals. For every new product, us design-engineers had to sit for days/weeks with the guys writing the manuals… and we hated every second of it, would rather be on the bench designing/debugging new things…. And it was easy for us juest to update something, like a better power-supply, informing production to use this newer supply, and somehow the guys writing the service manuals were left out of the loop, as ot saved so much time. In my old age, and trying to find fault stuff for which no service-manuals exist, I feel like such a d*ck… yeah, I get it, in today’s throw-away society, who needs detailed service manuals??? But now I am questioning it all… as a young kid, I could peruse a schematic-diagram that was glued on the inside of most equipment, from radio’s to TV’s and even early microwave-ovens, and I learned so much from it. Nowadays, even if you manage to find a service-manual from somebody, it is just a monkey see, monkey do procedure… and then order a new PCB… no detailed schematics, nothing…. Somewhere the electronics industry has turned to the dark side… no time for the designer to sit down with a technical writer describing how the circuit works, showing detailed voltages and waveforms at specific points, and so on…. It is actually sad😢😢😢

May have commented on this before, but part of my training in electronics at the start of my career in the Army was to remove all watches, rings, and other metal, including dog tags, before working on electronics. We did work around both high voltages, and low voltage high current supplies. If you've ever seen the results of someone getting a wedding or other ring shorted to a high current 5 V supply you'll be convinced that removal is a good practice ;-)

Those "weird shrouded male" connectors have been standard on computer servers for decades. The male end is IEC-320-C14. I think it's so that equipment can more easily have a "lock" mechanism that prevents accidental disconnect of the cord. Usually there is a little mechanism next to the socket that will secure around the cord, but this variac does not have such a mechanism. Some companies such as tripp-lite also sell them on computer extension cords. In that use case, the shroud protects from accidental electrocution of a user by covering a loose connector.
